Talkeetna, Alaska is a fun place to visit for visitors and locals alike.

Talkeetna, Alaska is one of the favorite destinations in Alaska for locals and tourists alike. You know that it’s a fun place when locals flock here all summer long. If your family is taking a tour of Alaska then Talkeetna is most likely one of your stops along the way. Why is Talkeetna, Alaska such a popular town to visit? Read on and find out!

Talkeetna, Alaska is about 2 1/2 hours north of Anchorage. It is about a 15 minute drive off the main highway which helps the town keep its unique character. Talkeetna also has a train stop within walking distance of the town.

What makes Talkeetna, Alaska so special?

(Other than the fact they had a cat named Stubbs as mayor for about 20 years.)

The View

The views of Denali from Talkeetna, Alaska are some of the best in the state.

Talkeetna sits at the perfect spot for ultimate Alaska Range and Denali viewing. You will almost always have a view of some of the beautiful mountains of the Alaska Range. If the weather is right and the “mountain is out” you will have absolutely stunning views of Denali. In fact, the views from here are often better than the park itself. Now, let me be clear. The top of Denali is often clouded and so there is a good chance that you will not be able to see the whole mountain in all its glory. But, even if you only see peeks of the top it is still fantastic.

The Food

There are quite a few restaurants and food trucks that are very popular in town. Denali Brewing Company and Mountain High Pizza Pie are two of the favorites. Then there is the Thai/Chinese/Indian restaurant that’s really good and right nearby, Talkeetna Tako serves up delicious tacos and quesadillas (don’t miss the halibut or salmon). Lastly, a shout out to the cute little Airstream that is the home to super yummy food at Talkeetna Spinach Bread. Really, where ever you choose is sure to be great.

A little way outside of town, the Flying Squirrel Bakery and Cafe is a definite favorite. Not only do they have delicious breads, bakery items, breakfast, and lunch, they also have yummy wood-fired pizzas at night Wed-Sat with as many local grown toppings as possible. Jazz Nights make Wednesdays extra fun!

The Alaskan History

The town of Talkeetna is a museum in itself. So many of the buildings are original. There is a really fun museum in town (Talkeetna Historical Society Museum). There is a fee of $5 for adults. The main building held a bunch of cool historic artifacts from the town as well. Many different townspeople are honored throughout the exhibits.

Then you go outside and down the boardwalk to the mining/railroad exhibit. This small little building (historic in itself) has a lot of information about how the people mined in the difficult territory. There is a small area dedicated to the history of the Alaska Railroad. There is a short little video too.

The last building, the mountaineering building, was one of the most fascinating. Inside was a huge topographic display of the Alaska Mountain Range that surrounds Denali. All around the room are pictures that show what the real mountain looks like from the angle you are looking at the map. There is also lots of info about what it takes to climb the tallest mountain in North America. So interesting!

The Historical Society has also put together a self-guided map of all the historic buildings around the town. You can find out when they were built, who lived there and what they did in town.

Awesome Alaskan Souvenirs

If you want Alaskan souvenirs, Talkeetna has them in abundance! There are quite a few stores along Main Street and then some on the road before you get into town. You will find clothing, books, food, knickknacks, art, pottery, jewelry, and so much more.

What I think is really cool is how you will find so many items by Alaskan artists. In fact, there is one store (Dancing Leaf Gallery) that only sells items created by Alaskans. They are pretty strict about it too. If an artist even moves out of Alaska they will be taken out of the store. So, this is the place you want to visit if you want truly Alaska items to bring home. I will say though, that you will find other places from Alaskan Artists. Just down the street, Designs by Shanda sells some fun metal art.

If you love to sew or quilt you definitely want to stop in the Patchwork Moose. The store is a sewers paradise of fabulous cotton prints, patterns, notions, and other stuff. Plus, they have some of the best Alaskan fabrics I have seen.

The Art Scene

In addition to the showcase of items from Alaskan artists in the shops there is fun, quirky art throughout the town. And then there is the music. Talkeetna has so many different music groups playing all summer long. While we were there, Mountain High Pizza Pie had a live band celebrating their anniversary. Of course, since the stage was outside you could hear the music up and down main street adding to the festive atmosphere.

Oh, you absolutely must go and see the “Spirt of Talkeetna.” Inside Susitna Valley Naturals you will find a breathtaking, hand-carved, display that truly captures the fun and quirky character of Talkeetna in both the summer and winter.

Absolutely Amazing Excursions

Talkeetna, Alaska has so many cool things to do. The flightseeing to Denali from here is the most popular and most astounding attraction. While we were at dinner a couple at a nearby table was going on and on to their server about their amazing trip and how much they loved landing on a glacier. You could definitely tell they would remember that tour for the rest of their lives.

Another really great thing to do is riding a jetboat up the Susitna and Talkeetna Rivers and riding the rapids in the canyons. The ATV tours are really thrilling too.

Traveling with multiple ages in your group?

Mobility–Since it isn’t very big it is easy to walk from one place to another. Most things are on Main Street. The roads are a little uneven and there might be a few stairs to navigate into shops, but not too many. Shuttles are possible to get to some of the meeting points for excursions a little outside of town. If walking long distances is difficult and you arrive in Talkeetna on the train, you will definitely want to get some transportation to go downtown.

Excursions–Jetboat excursions are an excellent adventure for family members of all ages.

Young children–My only caution if you are traveling with young children is that the shops have lots of things that would be very enticing for little hands. Enter with caution! If you don’t want to take your kids into the shops the village park is nearby and is a wide-open space to run and play. Even better, just down the street a bit, (approx. 10 min walk) is a pretty awesome playground.

Talkeetna, Alaska is definitely a fantastic destination for tourists and locals to visit. This fun little town has so much to offer.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial and Historic Sites

Pearl Harbor National Memorial is one of the must-do Oahu activities. Through the USS Arizona Memorial and other historic sites you will get a fuller picture of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the military forces in the Pacific during WWII.

At the USS Arizona Memorial, you have the chance to remember those who lost their lives on that fateful day, December 7, 1941. For kids, there is a Junior Ranger program to help kids understand the significance of this memorial. There is also a movie and exhibits to enjoy.

Other Pearl Harbor Historic Sites

In the area, but not run by the National Parks Service are some other historical sites that are very interesting. Tickets and transportation can be arranged at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

  • Battleship Missouri Memorial–The USS Missouri was the last battleship commissioned by the United States. The Japanese signed their surrender onboard, ending WWII. They have tours or you can go at your own pace.
  • USS Bowfin Submarine Museum–The USS Bowfin launched one year after the attack and was nicknamed the Pearl Harbor Avenger. She is permanently homeported at Pearl Harbor and guests can take a tour through the submarine.
  • Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum–This museum is housed in two hangars and the Ford Island Control Tower. The exhibits focus not only on the events of Pearl Harbor but also on the entire war in the Pacific. You will see a lot of aircraft used throughout the war, some even still have battle scars.

If you are traveling with very young children you can use a stroller in many places. The USS Missouri is stroller and wheelchair accessible. The USS Bowfin doesn’t allow children under 4 on the submarine, but they can enjoy the grounds while waiting for other family members to finish the tour (supervised of course).

If you have family members who aren’t as mobile there can be quite a bit of walking. They might want to stick to the USS Arizona and the hangar at the Aviation Museum with the exhibits (the hangar with more planes is fantastic but is pretty large). The USS Bowfin isn’t very large but the space is pretty cramped and the stairs are very steep. On the USS Missouri, they don’t have to visit every part. Just being on the battleship and seeing the scale is pretty awesome. There are elevators to some of the decks for wheelchair access.

There are so many different activities to choose while in Oahu, Hawaii. But these are such great ones that will appeal to just about everyone in your group of family or friends. You’re gonna love them!

On our recent vacation to Phoenix, Arizona we made sure that we spent an afternoon at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. I LOVE children’s museums. When our older kids were younger I started looking for a children’s museum on every trip. They are such a great place for kids to have some time to let loose and play. Kids don’t have to be quiet or super well-behaved. They get to play to their hearts content, discover and explore new things.

The Children’s Museum of Phoenix didn’t disappoint! Due to Covid, they were requiring tickets purchased in advance for a specific time and were limiting the number of people. All kids over 3 are required to wear masks at all times. And, all of their activities were outside. It wasn’t until we went to the restrooms when we were leaving that I saw the super awesome-looking climbing structure inside. I am really hoping that the inside might be open for our next trip this summer. But anyway, back to this experience.

As I said, all the activities were outside. Some of the activities were permanent fixtures that have always been available outside such as the large tubes, watering garden, small sandpit, and bike track.

I was really impressed with all the activities they brought outside to keep kids’ minds and creativity engaged. I believe that the activities change periodically but we got to experience

  • wonderful piles of sand complete with buckets and shovels,
  • an obstacle course with very interesting construction items,
  • an old fire truck and mail truck,
  • a maker area,
  • a painting area with rocks and a car.

But, our kids’ absolute favorite activity was the bubble machine. I think that they spent at least an hour jumping, diving, and dancing in and out of bubbles. They were soaked but smiling!

Our kids were throughly entertained for hours and were sad when we had to leave. Here are a few pictures from our afternoon.

So if you have an afternoon free while you are in Phoenix, AZ I would highly recommend spending some time at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. It could be the highlight of your trip.

Happy travels to you…until we meet again!

Take a ride on a train of the Alaska Railroad.

Well, cruise ships aren’t going to be sailing to Alaska this summer but that doesn’t mean that you still can’t visit Alaska. As I have said before, there is so much more in Alaska than what you see from a cruise ship. Let this be the year that you see more of the state of Alaska. And, traveling on the Alaska Railroad is the perfect way to do it. So, here are 5 reasons why your Alaska vacation should include a ride on the Alaska Railroad.

Hey! Alaska Residents, a ride on the Alaska Railroad is great for you too! The Railroad is a great way to have a family staycation.

Okay, now read on…

The journey is as great as the destination when you ride the Alaska Railroad!

#1 Gorgeous scenery

All along the road system in Alaska you will see beautiful scenery. From Seward to Fairbanks you will be delighted by all that you see from the roadway. BUT, the Alaska Railroad takes you away from the road system through the untouched wilds of Alaska. You will see even more stunning scenery you can only see by riding the rails.

#2 Everyone gets to enjoy the ride

Being stuffed into a car isn’t the most comfortable ride for anyone. The driver has to pay attention to the road and cannot see all beauty. The passengers are stuck sitting in one seat for hours. A ride on the Alaska Railroad is so much better for everyone. The driver gets to see everything. During the ride, everyone can get up and stretch their legs and visit other train cars along the way. No one is stuck in one seat for the whole trip. How wonderful is that!

#3 A better view

Car windows are quite small. You often have to crane your neck to see all the amazing mountains, wildlife and other scenery as you drive by. Now picture yourself in a train car with giant picture windows all along the sides. Then picture going up into the Vista Dome cars with sweeping panoramic views. You will get to see so much more of the breathtaking scenery you came to Alaska to see when you travel by train rather than a car.

#4 Dining in style

The Alaska Railroad has two different levels of luxury you can choose from as you travel on the train. Adventure Class provides dining and bar service for purchase at the Wilderness Cafe. Some trains even have some dining tables for Adventure Class.

But the true luxury comes with all-inclusive GoldStar Service available on the two major train routes. Instead of eating on your lap as you drive you can enjoy sitting down in the full-service dining car and being served a delicious meal. How luxurious to watch gorgeous scenery pass by as you sit comfortably eating great food and enjoying an adult beverage or two! You can ONLY do this on the Alaska Railroad!

#5 Great for a day trip or a multi-day vacation

The last great reason to ride the Alaska Railroad is you can be so flexible. Your ride on the rails can be just a day excursion, like heading down to Seward for the day, or a long, multi-day complete vacation experience.

One benefit of a vacation package with the Alaska Railroad is that you are only bound by the train schedule. The days that you are visiting the different towns and cities in Alaska are your own. You don’t have to be following the schedule of a tour group. All your activities can be tailored to what you want to do. Then you just make sure you are back to the train when you are scheduled to move on to the next exciting destination. Such great flexibility without having to worry about your transportation from place to place!

How is a ride on the Alaska Railroad great for a multi-family/generational vacation?

  • Everyone can ride together.
  • Seats can be easily switched up to let everyone have a chance to sit by everyone.
  • Kids (well, everyone) can easily get up and stretch their legs.
  • Comfortable seats all will enjoy. Some even turn so 4 can sit and chat together.
  • No driving coordination needed. Everyone gets there at the same time.
  • Once at the destination each family can pick their own activities or everyone can stick together. It’s up to you.

Get out on the open road this summer on a road trip!

Many families are chomping at the bit to get out and go somewhere. But, due to the current situation, they are a bit more hesitant to get on a plane. Is that you? Enter a great vacation alternative, the all-American road trip! There is so much to see and do on your family road trip throughout the United States. This summer, families can plan a short weekend road-trip or the ultimate month-long vacation. So many possibilities!

Road trips don’t have to be overwhelming. With a little advanced planning your trip can go much more smoothly. Now, let’s dive in to some tips that will help with planning your next road trip.

Have your Major Stops Plotted and Accommodations Booked Ahead

Part of the fun of road-tripping is having a bit of flexibility and kind of going with the flow. But, if the whole trip is this way it can get overwhelming. To have the best of both worlds figure out a few stops on your trip and what days you want to be there and book your accommodations. This gives you flexibility between the main stops but also confidence that you definitely have a place to stay every few days.

If you are traveling in a motorhome or trailer, pick campgrounds with shower facilities and laundry so you can clean up every once in a while. Another caution for those staying in campgrounds and want a bit of flexibility with their travels. In the morning figure out about how far you will travel that day and then search for campgrounds in that area. Call early in the day to get reservations as many campgrounds close up in the early evening.

Lastly a caution for Alaskan road-trippers in the Lower 48–It gets dark early in the States. We are so used to having daylight into the wee hours we don’t think much of pulling into a campground very late at night. Due to the fact the sun goes down so much earlier it is much more challenging to pull in late at night (and many campgrounds are closed up).

Don’t Pack In Too Much

There are so many awesome things to see and do in the United States it is very easy to pack something into every moment. Packing in too much stuff will be exhausting and make your summer road-trip less fun. Pick out a few major activities in each location. Then have a few extra things you would like to do if you have time and energy. This also gives you the opportunity to really dive in and enjoy the activities instead of rushing through them to check them off the list.

Plan for Down Days

It is important to plan for some days to kick back and relax. You might choose to spend the day at a park, splash pad, pool, lake or just hanging out at your resort, hotel, or campground. These rest days will give you the energy to get right back into the planned activities the next day.

I learned this lesson the hard way. On our 6-week summer road trip from Florida to Alaska I packed a lot of stuff in. We saw so many amazing things. But, what is the day my kids remember as the best day? The 4th of July we spent stuck with a flat tire in a park and ride lot off the freeway. We were supposed to be enjoying the 4th of July activities in Boston. Instead we road our bikes to a nearby lake and had a relaxing day in the water. Lesson learned! Next time I will plan for down time.

Talk to the Locals

The quintessential all-American Road Trip Route

When you stop for gas or go into the grocery store ask the locals what they like to do in the area. Often they will tell you about fantastic places that are a little less traveled. They are also a wonderful source for finding great places to eat.

Have a Cooler for Drink and Snacks

Inevitably someone is going to get hungry or thirsty while on your summer family road-trip. In our family, this is always about a half-hour after a bathroom stop. A small cooler with drinks and snacks will keep you from having to stop as often. We have a great collapsible cooler that is great but we also really like using insulated lunchboxes.

Ideas for keeping it all cool:

  • Purchase ice at a store. Bring large ziplock bags if going the ice route. The bags can help keep the water contained.
  • Get ice from the ice machine at your hotel
  • If you have access to a freezer, ice packs work really well. This method eliminates the water problem from melted ice.
  • Freeze water bottles and fill cooler with a mixture of frozen and unfrozen drinks. The benefit of this is having cold drinks all day long and takes up less space. You will have to see how long the ice in the bottles takes to melt to know how many to put in the cooler each day.

Download Maps Ahead of Time

All across the United States are pockets without cellular coverage. In these areas your Google Maps navigation won’t work. Google Maps allows you to download maps of specific areas that you can then use without being connected to cellular data.

Bonus tip: The same goes for streamed media like podcasts and music players (think Spotify or Pandora). Get some downloaded before you lose coverage so you never have to be without entertainment.

Bonus Bonus tip: Navigation will suck your phone battery quickly. Have a charger that can plug into your car to keep your phone charged during the drive.

Minimize Activities Brought by the Kids

If your kids are like mine they will want to bring so much stuff. But, that stuffed backpack of activities will quickly makes a mess all over and cause major meltdowns when they lose something under the seat. Have them choose a few compact items that they really enjoy and call it good. Surprisingly, small containers of playdough have always been really successful for us. Audiobooks, stories, and music downloaded beforehand help pass the time and are educational as well. As you travel you might want to pick up a new activity for them to do along the way to keep them entertained. Steer clear of anything with a lot of pieces.

Get Road Side Assistance Coverage

Many insurance companies have the option of adding Road Side Assistance to your vehicle insurance policy. It usually doesn’t cost too much but it will give you peace of mind knowing that if you have major trouble you will be covered. We were so thankful for Road Side Assistance when we blew a tire driving down the highway. We were up and rolling again the next business day.

Get Your Vehicle Ready to Go

Before you head out it is a really good idea to get a tune-up for your car. An oil change is very important. Make sure all of the fluids are topped off. Get that emergency kit together (if you are renting a car you still might want to pack some of these things to bring with you):

  • spare tire
  • tire iron and jack
  • flares and/or traffic triangle
  • safety vest
  • tire pressure gauge
  • duct tape
  • jumper cables
  • adjustable wrench and multi-screwdriver
  • hose clamps
  • gloves
  • tire inflater that plugs into 12v accessory outlet
  • quart of oil

Bring a First Aid Kit Along

You never know when an accident will happen. Having a stocked first aid kit will keep you from panicking about how to treat injuries. Have a supply of bandaids, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes, bandages (including a triangle bandage), gauze and tape, thermometer, scissors, pain medication, throw-up bags, emergency blankets, and hand wipes.

Pack a Trash Bag or Two

When you spend so much time in the car it has a tendency to get really messy really quickly. A trash bag will be a sanity saver from the mess.

Hopefully, these tips will be helpful for you in beginning to plan your next family road-trip summer vacation. Have a great time on your road trip exploring all the wonders of the United States! Now, this article focuses on the United States but the principles can be applied to many other countries.

Taking a drive down the lush Maui, Hawaii coastline is great for getting away from the crowds.

Many travelers want to find places to vacation where they can get away. They search to discover locations to be by themselves enjoying the fresh air, the nature around them, and fewer other people. Maui, Hawaii is just the vacation location for getting away from the rigors of everyday life, and crowds and into relaxation, and adventure.

Are you looking for a vacation that gives you and your family a chance to reconnect with out being surrounded by other people? Maui, Hawaii might be just the place for you to get away from the crowds! Take a look at the following places to get out and explore!

See this pagefor current travel requirements to Hawaii.

Ioa Valley State Park

Ioa Valley State Park is located in central Maui, west of Wailuku. One highlight of this park is the iconic Ioa Needle, a 1200-foot green-mantled rock outcropping. It overlooks Ioa Stream and is a great place to hike.

From the parking lot, there is a paved path to view the Ioa Needle and beautiful views of the valley. There is also a rainforest walk and interactive exhibits at the Hawaii Nature Center for families to enjoy. Since the needle often clouds up during the day it is best to get there early for good viewing. Check out this page for hiking safety information in Maui.

The Ioa Valley also has historical significance as the location that Kamehameah defeated Maui’s forces, changing Hawaiian history, in a fierce battle in 1790. This state park is a great place to explore this bit of Hawaiian culture.

Horseback Riding in the Upcountry

Upcountry Maui is Hawaiian cowboy country. Since the late 1800s, Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolo, have been wrangling cattle in the open fields on horseback. Now, ranches are giving families the opportunity to take a horseback-riding excursion and explore the mid-slopes of Haleakala. Many offer private horseback excursions for just your family or group.

If you happen to be in Maui on the 4th of July you might want to check out the Makawao Rodeo, Hawaii’s largest paniolo competition. There will be a parade and traditional rodeo events such as barrel racing, calf roping, and bronco riding with, of course, Hawaiian character tossed in. Note: The rodeo is probably not the best place to feel secluded but, for those willing to be in a crowd, it is sure to be festive and fun.

While in the Upcountry, you might want to stop in Makawao. This charming town is known for its cream puffs at the T. Komoda Store and the art scene. In fact, Makawao was once considered one of the top 25 arts destinations in the United States. You will be amazed by glassblowers, wood sculptors, and painters as you wander through the unique shops, boutiques, and art galleries.

The Road to Hana

While the road to Hana might be filled with cars there are plenty of places to get out and explore where you will feel like you have it all to yourself. This is a fantastic adventure in Maui, Hawaii to get away from the crowds! All along the road, there are pullouts that have trails you can explore. Some are more traveled than others. A few will have larger parking lots.

A few good stops are:

  • Waikamoi Ridge Trail–mile 9.5
  • The Garden of Eden Arboretum–mile 10 ($)
  • Kaumahina State Wayside Park–mile 12
  • Honomanu Bay Lookout–mile 14
  • Keanae–mile 17
  • Waiʻānapanapa State Park–mile 32.

Driving the road to Hana is an ALL Day trip. It takes about 3 hours to get to Hana if you don’t stop. so you will want to leave very early in the morning if you want to do this as a day trip. Also, don’t try and see everything in one trip. Pick a couple of stops and save the rest for another trip. (What a great reason to vacation in Maui again!). Staying overnight in Hana is highly recommended. This little town is so peaceful and rejuvenating and there is so much to see in this area that an overnight stay is a lovely addition to your vacation.

Haleakala National Park

When most people think of Haleakala National Park they think of the crater 10,000 ft above sea level. While the actual crater is fascinating you won’t feel like you have the whole place to yourself, ever. But, there are many trails around the crater and off the road up to the crater that are much less traveled. Safety note: Haleakala is at very high elevation. The temperature is much lower than the coast (easily 20-30 degrees cooler) and there is less oxygen. It is very easy to suffer from high-altitude sickness if you exert yourself too much.

There is another side to Haleakala National Park that is much less traveled. The Kipahulu section which is just past the town of Hana. This side has very different landscape than what you will find up to and at the crater. This area is lush and green with bamboo forests, waterfalls, and bubbling streams. The Pipiwai Trail to the 400 ft Waimoku Falls is a great hike into this area.

Haleakala National Park cannot be mentioned without talking about the spectacular sunrises and sunsets. They are glorious from the top, near the crater parking lot. Watching the sun come up or go down is not people-free but you will be so glad you went. Some consider the sunrise to be the most spectacular on earth. Important: You must make a reservation online up to 7 days prior to park and see the sunrise.

Nakalele Point and Blowhole

If you continue to drive northwest past Ka’anapali and Kapalua to about mile marker 38.5 you will find the turnout for the Nakalele Blowhole and heart rocks. Head down the hill about 200 feet to the rocks jutting out into the ocean and you will come to the blowhole. You can’t miss it. You can actually see it from the top but it is much more impressive from below. The geyser of water shooting up in the air (sometimes 100 ft) is caused by the ocean flowing under and forcing water through a large hole in the rocks.

Wear good shoes for this activity. The trail on the way down is coated with dirt and loose rocks and the rocks on the bottom are slippery. Also, be careful getting too close to the edge of the rocks. You might find yourself at best, quite wet, and at worst, a painful tossing onto the rocks.

Down on the rocks a little bit away from the blowhole there is a spot in the rocks where the whole makes an almost perfect heart shape. It is a fun find and photo op.

You will have company on this adventure but because it’s a bit of a drive there are not usually huge crowds.

The island of Maui is such a wonderful vacation destination, so full of beauty, Hawaiian culture, many things to do and see, and a great place to relax. Maui, Hawaii is definitely a great place for getting away from the crowds and enjoying what’s important in life!

Whittier, Alaska is a teeny, tiny town that actually has some great reasons to visit. It is the “Gateway to Prince Williams Sound”. Since it sits right on the coast with access to the ocean, Whitter is the departure and arrival port for many Princess Alaska cruises. But whether you are visiting Whittier as part of a cruise or just to explore for the day, it is a great destination. Read on and find out what you can do on your day trip to Whittier, Alaska!

Location

Whitter is located in southcentral Alaska right on Prince William Sound. It is just 60 miles south of Anchorage making it a perfect day trip destination.

How to get to Whittier

The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel Portage Side

Getting to Whittier is half of the fun of visiting. Since Whittier sits on the coastline on the other side of the Chugach Mountains the only way to get there is through a tunnel. The one-way, 2.5 mile Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is the longest in North America and is shared by the train and vehicles. There are scheduled times every hour for the train to use the tunnel and for vehicles. It is very important to know the tunnel schedule before you head to Whittier. As you can imagine the schedule is often delayed so it is important to add extra travel time through the tunnel. Plan for at least 30-40 minutes to get through the tunnel. The current cost for private vehicles is $13.

What to explore in Whittier, Alaska

Water Activities

Whittier is on an amazing body of water! From Whittier you can go kayaking, rent jetskis, take a leisure boating excursion or join on of the glacier day cruises. If you love fishing, Prince William Sound is one of the best places to fish on the planet and there are many guides ready to help you catch your limit. And all of these activities are surrounded by some absolutely stunning scenery!

Hiking

Emerald Cove Trail

Around Whittier there are three fantastic hiking trails. If you are hiking in late July/August then be on the lookout for delicious berries and also bears.

  • Emerald Cove Trail–This is a relatively flat trail but is VERY muddy and quite rooty. You will be watching your foot placement pretty much the whole way. Children can hike this trail but you definitely will want boots. BUT, this trail is well worth the effort because when you look up you will be awestruck by the gorgeous surroundings nearby and across the bay. The full length is around 3 miles, but there is a first cove about a mile or so in and is a beautiful place to stop, play and then turn around.
  • Horsetail Falls Trail–This trail is a 1 mile moderately uphill hike to see the beautiful Horsetail Falls. For those wanting a more difficult hike, you can continue up to Blackstone Ridge to see the waterfalls from the top.
  • Portage Pass Trail–This is the most difficult hike of the three but probably also boasts the best views from the top. The trailhead for this hike is just after you get through the tunnel. The 2-mile hike will take you up and over the mountain (around 800 ft) to Portage Lake, right across from the glacier. And then on the way back, you will look down on the Whittier harbor, and Prince William Sound. Absolutely gorgeous!

Around the Town

View from parking area/picnic spot at the end of Shotgun Cove Trail (Road)
  • Sit at the head of the bay and enjoy the scenery and have a picnic.
  • Hang out at the harbor and watch all the boats go out and come in.
  • Eat at one of the restaurants on the waterfront.
  • Drive out to the end of the road and take in the beauty of the water and mountains.
  • Go birdwatching. There are so many birds to spot as well as the largest Kittiwake rookery in the North Pacific.
  • Take a self-guided tour of the historical sites.
  • Visit the Prince William Sound Museum in the Anchor Inn.
  • Stroll over to the 14-story Begich Towers which is home to nearly all of Whittier’s residents, a school, grocery store, church, and post office.

A day trip to Whittier, Alaska makes a great addition to any vacation to Alaska. If a trip to visit Alaska is on your travel bucket list please contact me! I would love to help you plan an Alaska vacation your family will remember forever.
